I got a chance to visit the PakWheels Auto Show at Lake View Park, Islamabad a while back. I went early in the morning and only stayed around 30 minutes, but that was enough time to walk through and shoot a few things that caught my eye — a handful of vintage cars especially stood out among the show.
The gear I shot with
I had my Canon 60D with me, paired with the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM — a lens I still recommend to anyone shooting on a Canon crop body. It’s sometimes called the “L glass for crop bodies” because of how sharp and well-built it is for the price. Between this one and the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, you really don’t need to carry more than one lens in your bag for a day like this — both cover everything from portraits to wider landscape-style shots.
The 60D itself was a big step up for me at the time — I’d come from a Canon 450D, and moving to a semi-pro body like the 60D was a noticeable jump in handling and image quality. If you’re just getting into photography, I’d still say start with a solid crop body like this before jumping into full-frame gear — you’ll learn just as much and spend a fraction of the money.
The light wasn’t ideal, but the cars made up for it
The morning sun was already harsh by the time I got shooting, which isn’t the best light for car photography — lots of hard reflections off the paint and chrome. Still, a few of the vintage cars on display were striking enough that the shots came out well despite the conditions. Have a look through the gallery below.
