BTS Newborn Photoshoot: On-Location Baby Photography Session

One of my clients recently asked for an on-location newborn photoshoot rather than coming into a studio, so we packed up our portable setup and took it to them instead. It’s always a fun challenge — you’re working around a baby’s schedule and mood rather than a fixed shot list, but that’s part of what makes newborn sessions rewarding when they come together.

Setting up on-site

Since we didn’t have a fixed studio space to work with, we brought a portable backdrop and lighting kit and set it up right in the client’s home. This lets us keep the baby comfortable in a familiar environment instead of the stress of traveling somewhere new — usually a better outcome for a newborn shoot.

What the session covers

A typical newborn session includes a mix of posed shots (with soft wraps, props, and baby-safe posing techniques) and more candid, natural moments — parents holding the baby, small details like tiny hands and feet. It’s a slower, more patient kind of shoot than most of my other work, since everything moves at the baby’s pace.
